Backtesting

Testing a trading strategy on historical data to estimate how it would have performed.

A backtest replays a rule set over past data to measure return, drawdown, and consistency before risking money. Its honesty depends on look-ahead-safe, survivorship-free data and a model of costs and slippage — without those, it flatters every idea.
